Chaga_DIamond_of_The_Forest (NL) Benefits of Chaga Mushroom Extract

 

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a hard wood-like fungus with a light brown interior and a black skin. The Chaga grows on the trunk of the white birch. Chaga thrives best in a climate where the temperature is at least four months per year -40 ° Celsius. Chaga can mostly be found in the northern hemisphere in a strip near the Arctic Circle, which includes Alaska, Canada, northern Scandinavia, Siberia, Manchuria and Japan but can also be found, less often, further south in NL, UK and Germany.

It is not common being found. On average on only 2-3 trees per 10.000 birch trees. The fungus can only be harvested once every 7 years. Since Chaga is so rare and costly, the fungus is also called the "Diamond of the Forest”. Chaga is considered to be the most important of the medicinal mushrooms because of the extraordinary amount of antioxidant and the presence of betulinic acid.

Betulinic acid

The Chaga mushroom extracts betulin from birch tree and converts that in a concentrated form in betulinic acid. Betulinic acid has a cytostatic effect: It inhibits the growth and division of cancer cells. Chaga contains a lot of betulinic acid in a form suitable for oral use. It contains the whole spectrum of immunity stimulating effects such as found in other medicinal mushrooms like Maiitake and Shiitake.
 

Antioxidant
In normal metabolic processes like breathing and digestion of food, free radicals are set free. In case of stress and exposure to electromagnetic radiation, sun or polluted air, this happens in a higher degree. Free radicals are unstable oxygen atoms that neutralize themselves by connecting to body cells. In doing so, they causes damage that leads to accelerated aging and wear and weakens the defence.

Antioxidant protects us against free radicals. Antioxidants enter us when we eat vegetables and fruit. The amount of antioxidants in food can be measured and is expressed in ORAC (Oxygen Radical absorbance capacity). On the ORAC scale Chaga contains by far the most antioxidants of all natural products. The best-known antioxidant is SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase) an enzyme that neutralizes free oxygen radicals in organisms in a very rapid way and thus keeps our cell membranes healthy and flexible.
